Posted: Jul 22, 2011 8:10am

Fuelwood cutting permits are now available out of Big Pines Information Station until approximately mid October.

Permits are $25 per cord for softwood, $35 per cord for hardwood/mix.

Permits are good for 1 month. 4 cords per person, per year.

There are no designated cutting sites at this time, only boundaries in which you must stay within. Cutting of dead and down trees only. Be prepared to do alot of work.

For more information, call/stop by the Big Pines Information Station: 249-3504. We are open Friday - Monday 8:30- 4:00, however those weekday hours may vary... so please call before you come up.

Thanks to the USFS for making permits available at the Big Pines VIS. We got one and did scouting trips down the Big Rock road finding some small amounts of downed oak, and in Mescal Creek found some nice Pinon. It's interesting to note that even though Pinon is a pine, it's BTU figures are right up there with some oak. Red Oak is 24.6 million BTUs per cord,
with Pinon at 27.1, and White Oak at 29.1. And Pinon has a great fragrance when burned. Don't plan on splitting it by hand though. Pinon grows with a natural spiral much like Eucalyptus and very hard to split.

It's really hard to find decent firewood out there. A few years ago there was a lot of talk about tree removal. People were saying that WW would look like a "logging town", with all the trucks and helicopters. What happened to that? Last year I struggled to find 2 cords, must be much worse this year.

The biggest problem in recent years is the increasing price of heating fuel (natural gas and propane). That has driven the demand up for firewood in this area by more than 100% in the last 4 yrs. The overall poor economy isn't helping much either, I'm sure.

The other issue is, we have a relatively healthy forest around Wrightwood. There is not a large need to cut down alot of trees. Not to mention, the Angeles Forest is only about 25% coniferous forest to begin with, so we don't have that much forested area as it is.

There was talk a few years ago about more logging due to the bark beetle problem. However, our area recovered pretty well from that, and there was not the need to remove thousands of trees like they had to do in the Big Bear/Running Springs area. They got hit alot harder than we did, and also have about 5 times the amount of timber that we have in the Angeles.

There are projects going on, bust most of these projects are small and involve more ground vegetation than timber... as well as some planting projects of trees as well.

You are right, it is tight again this year... however, I have been seeing people driving away with their trucks full of wood the last couple weeks, so there is some wood out there.

My best advice is, if you plan to get a permit and do it yourself, do it sooner than later...
